SAN PETERSBURGO, UNA CIUDAD CREATIVA EN TIEMPOS DEL ZAR ALEJANDRO I: LA APORTACION AL URBANISMO Y A LA ARQUITECTURA DEL INGENIERO ESPANOL AGUSTIN DE BETANCOURT

El objetivo de este trabajo consiste en ofrecer un nuevo enfoque sobre el ingeniero y arquitecto espanol Agustin de Betancourt (1758–1824), desde una perspectiva global dentro del contexto historico que le toco vivir, la Ilustracion, la Revolucion Francesa, el Imperio Napoleonico, la Revolucion Industrial, y la Rusia del primer cuarto del siglo XIX, donde desarrollo una gran actividad como ingeniero, arquitecto e inventor. Analizaremos su perfil personal y profesional, asi como la relacion compleja que mantuvo con el zar Alejandro I entre 1808 a 1824. Su aportacion a la transformacion urbana de San Petersburgo fue muy notable, y contribuyo a que se convirtiera en uno los nucleos urbanos mas esplendido y armonioso de Europa. Entre sus obras destacaremos la importante participacion en la construccion de la catedral de San Isaac, la columna de Alejandro I en la plaza del Palacio de Invierno, diseno puentes, canales, la ampliacion del puerto de Kronstadt, y una draga para limpiar sus fondos, la fabrica de papel moneda , Goznak. Asi como otras obras en Rusia: la construccion de la Feria de Nizhni Novgorod y el Manezh en Moscu. Tambien fundo en San Petersburgo el Instituto de Vias de Comunicacion, Puentes y Canales, y fue nombrado Director General del Cuerpo de Ingenieros de la Comunicacion Interior. Se le considero uno de los mejores ingenieros de la Europa de su epoca.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to offer a new approach to the Spanish engineer and architect Agustin de Betancourt (1758–1824), from a global perspective within the historical context that he was live, the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, the Napoleon Empire, the Industrial Revolution, and the Russia of the first quarter of the 19th century, where he developed a great activity as engineer, architect, and inventor. We will analyze your personal and professional profile, as well as the complex relationship that remained with the Tsar Alexandre I between 1808 to 1824. His contribution to the urban transformation of St. Petersburg was very notable, and he played an important role in that St. Petersburg became one the most splendid and harmonious European towns. Among his works we will highlight the significant participation in the construction of the St. Isaac Cathedral, Alexandre I column in the square of the Winter Palace, he designed bridges, canals, the expansion of the Kronstadt Port, and a dredger to clean their funds, the Mint, Goznak. As well as other works in Russia: the construction of the Nizhni Novgorod fair and the Manezh in Moscow. He also founded in San Petersburg the Institute of Roads Communication, Bridges and Canals, and he was General Director of the Engineers Corps of inside Communication. He was considered one of the best engineers in the Europe of his time.
